Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is the third main greenhouse gas, responsible for 4% of global warming.
January 14, 2024

Nitrous oxide is the third main greenhouse gas, and the one with the most singular source: Nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrous oxide has a higher warming potential per ton than either CO2 or methane, about 265 and 4 times higher respectively. Nitrous oxide is only responsible for about 4% of warming, but will eventually become one of the hardest climate problems to solve. Our agricultural system relies on fertilizer use, and nearly all current fertilizers result in the release of nitrous oxide.
