The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world, holding a majority of the Earth’s remaining rainforest land. It was once one of the largest carbon sinks in the world, but recently became a carbon source, emitting more greenhouse gasses than it absorbs. 60% of the forest lies within Brazil.

Deforestation has been a problem in the Amazon for decades, and recently spiked in 2019 President Jair Bolsonaro, but in 2023 dropped down to the lowest in 10 years under Brazil’s new President, Lula da Silva.
