1.5°C is the temperature increase above pre-industrial levels above which we risk climate tipping points. If we can keep the increase in average temperature below 1.5°C, then natural emissions will almost certainly not increase significantly. If the increase in average temperature exceeds 1.5°C, then we risk triggering tipping point cycles that cause environments to release massive amounts of greenhouse gasses, greatly worsening climate change.
