EVs are one of the main individual-scale ways to combat climate change. ICE cars are very inefficient, only using about 20% of the energy potential of the gas they burn. This means that even if electric vehicles are charged using electricity from a coal power plant, the least CO2 efficient way to generate electricity, they still end up being more climate friendly. Of course, as electrical grids build up their renewable electricity sources, the efficiency advantage of EVs increases drastically.
EVs do currently have a higher carbon cost to manufacture than ICE cars, due to their large batteries, however, it will be easier to decarbonize the manufacturing process of these batteries than it will be to make gas cars not run on gas.
